This is a rare pre-release edition of Skunk Magazine, issued just before the official launch of Issue #1 on January 28, 2005. Published in Montreal, Canada, Skunk quickly became one of the most outspoken cannabis culture magazines of its era, blending satire, politics, grower interviews, recipes, and social commentary.

The pre-release issue is a historic piece of cannabis ephemera, distributed to promote the magazine’s debut and highlight its rebellious, countercultural voice. Inside are features such as:

  • Grower interview with Joint Doctor
  • “Bud the Builder” DIY gear tips
  • Cannabis recipes like Magic Cookie Bars
  • Cultural and political satire (“G.I. Joe Joins the War on Drugs?”)
  • Editorials by founding editor David Strange and contributors including Boris St. Maurice and Sharon Stoned

Back cover advertising promotes the Montreal Seed Bank, one of the earliest Canadian cannabis seed distributors—making this copy a snapshot of legalization efforts and underground cannabis culture in the mid-2000s.

Measuring approximately 11” x 8.5”, this glossy magazine is not just reading material but a collectible historical artifact. Copies of this pre-release are exceptionally scarce, as most were circulated only in limited promotional runs prior to full distribution.

Why Collect It?

  • Pre-Release Issue – Rare promotional run before Issue #1 hit newsstands
  • Canadian Cannabis History – Published at the dawn of widespread legalization efforts
  • Cultural Artifact – Featuring early voices in cannabis activism and underground press
  • Ephemera Value – Highly collectible for cannabis historians, magazine collectors, and ephemera
